On the evening of January 9th, Kyle Reedstrom was sitting at home with Hayleigh Bruns, his girlfriend. As a couple, one Monday each month the two get intentional about giving back to their community. They’ve coined it their “Monday Night Movement.”
This Monday their conversation centered on a recent event that struck Fargo-Moorhead’s YWCA. Bruns had come across the article on inforum.com, “57 women, children moved out of YWCA shelter during water damage repairs.” The article highlighted the permanent ruin of the supplies local women and children depend upon, including diapers.
Reedstrom, a Buyer’s Agent with Hatch Realty, took to his personal Facebook page, and together Reedstrom and Bruns shared the article and writing:
“We need some diapers people!!! Recently the YWCA building on University S had a pipe burst! Water damaged the building and ruined most all of their supplies…INCLUDING ALL THE DANG DIAPERS!! That’s alota bare baby booties people! Hayleigh and I vow to donate 1 diaper for every like and 1 PACK of diapers for every share on this post! It’s that simple!”
As of 12 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2017, Reedstrom has over 450 “likes” and over 400 “shares.” Neither Reedstrom or Bruns were expecting the exposure to grow this large; now, Reedstrom says he is committed to the cause. “I was asked by a couple of friends when I’m going to take down the post,” says Reedstrom. “I’m not, I told them. I’m keeping this thing up until Friday, the day we buy the diapers.”
When asked how he felt about the exposure and amount of people engaging, Reedstrom said, “I didn’t think it was going to get this big. The lesson here for me is that I can and should think bigger because this community can make big things happen.”
Reedstrom and Bruns are set to purchase and deliver their diapers on Friday, January 13, 2017.
